The editing in many scenes is highly discontinuous and the plot never bothers to fully explain character relationships. I am not sure I care for the "surprise" at the end but this is one of the few films that deserves to be called truly original.
Peculiar Western...existential, indeed. Millie Perkins sure was beautiful, but I think she's out of her depth as an actress here.

But I am a sucker for weird things :-D I love the natural lighting and the almost surreal events like meeting with the man with a broken leg. But it is the absurd surreal aspect that gives it a random existential touch of fatalism. The characters are led to their destiny like a butterfly toward a candle. However, the ending, ragardless of whether it surprises some or not, is almost shocking in its beauty, elegant simplicity. Highly recommended if for only the ending. There are certain things that are not meant to answer anything, but to make one ponder and just reflect on the poetics regardless of the income. This film with its ending is one of those type of things.

B movie western about a woman's search for revenge. Trys to be strange and suceeds. Highlight is Nicholson.

It's a surreal journey across the desert as a few bounty hunters make their way after an unknown bounty. Many plot details are left unexplained as the story moves forward, though careful attention to dialogue helps make sense of a few things. The end left me in awe. Monte Hellman is the man.

(read more) Minimalist Western that would probably be considered an experimental film today (produced by Roger Corman) with an ending that may or may not make sense depending on how you interpret it and how closely you've been paying attention during earlier parts of the movie---basically, the plot involves a woman (Millie Perkins) who hires some gunfighters (Warren Oates is one, and later a young, oily Jack Nicholson) to accompany her in a 'secret' journey across the desert. Hijinks ensue. High on mystery and atmosphere, and filled with flawed characters, it can be viewed literally as a sort of noir-in-the-old-west or as an existential drama. Either way, it may not be a good movie for parties, but it does have some striking imagery and performances.
Decent revenge film starring Warren Oates and an evil Jack Nicholson (is there any other kind?). Good luck finding a quality dvd though.
