we have this to blame/celebrate either way you see it for all the 'teen' movies that came after it...

I have found it: The Cameron Crowe movie that isn't incredible lame! (Well Almost Famous was really good, but the presence of Jimmy Fallon watered it down significantly) It is interesting to see Sean Penn in a comedic role. Especially someone who is well known for being overly-serious about everything in real life. I guess the closest thing from today that someone can compare this to, would be an Apatow film, which is way off from what this is. that goes to show they don't make films like this anymore, and they won't make films 20 years from now like the ones Apatow makes now. Apparently Nicholas Cage was in this. I didn't notice him, which was a plus.
Sean Penn's Charachter wasn't the usual depressed man you usually see him play. It was odd seeing him play such a loose devil-may-care attitude character.
I recommend it.

The characters are high school stereotypes, but they feel like real people, giving the scenes life and heart. Unfortunately, the story gets predictable and a little corny as it progresses. A watchable and somewhat classy comedy.

Even though it was an early template of the 80's high school movie, it lacks the comedic energy and character investment of later teen flicks. But it's not hard to understand the film's cult appeal. The cast is a unique selection (although many of them were too old to convincingly pass for high school students), with the obvious standout being Sean Penn as a perpetually stoned surfer.
A fantastic film about growing up in the 80's with of course, a killer soundtrack. Ridiculous cast with a bunch of nobodies for the day. Final note, Phoebe Cates is stunning.

Phoebe Cates in the red bikini was every bit as good as I imagined it, the surprising nudity from Jennifer Jason Leigh was obviously welcome and I got a few laughs now and then but the movie as a whole was disappointing. It was cool to see all the famous faces before they were famous but it just wasn't as funny as I had hoped it would be. Good soundtrack, though. "She must be somebody's baby..."
The best 80s high school film because it is hilarious and has no annoying message or uplifting fluff.
