(read more) A sparkling, bittersweet fairy tale from the outer rim of Woody Allen's most fecund period. Alice, along with Shadows and Fog and Husbands and Wives, fell at the cusp of Allen's creative desert - a valley that extended from the early 1990s until the taught, masterfully executed epoch of Match Point in 2005. Nonetheless, Mia Farrow is purely delightful (as she was, generally, without fail for Allen) as a sentimental, almost infantine, apparently bird-brained socialite desperately seeking meaning in a world consumed by mindless shopping and beauty salons. Bernadette Peters is an absolute blessing as the Muse; Blythe Danner, Robin Bartlett, and Keye Luke form a typically Allenian supporting cast. Note also the pitch-perfect soundtrack, gilded throughout by Jackie Gleason.

Like most Woody Allen movies, it's a little bit funny, a little bit weird, and more about character than plot.

One of the best ways to watch a romantic comedy is to have it made by Woody Allen. Then put in some mysticism and supernatural elements and you really can't help but fucking love the film.

Muy recomendable, sobretodo a los que nos gustan los films de Woody Allen pero sobretodo aquellos en los que el no aparece (y por eso se acepta el tener un doble ranking).

Like 'Another Woman' with a supernatural and lightly comic edge. I admire the offbeat outcome and its deconstruction of this character's life with such a whimsical take.

It's a dramatic story but Woody pulls off some of his funniest bits. It's a realistic character study but it's a fantasy. And it yanks people into its story from straight off of any given New York City block, like the title character, played by Mia Farrow in her most becoming performance next to The Purple Rose of Cairo, the wife of a millionaire with two kids, but terribly unhappy. When she meets Joe Mantegna, playing a saxophonist at a school function, she sees an unattainable opportunity for happiness. Aggravated by physical pain, she consults her herbalist, a mystical Asian man, who uses magical herbs to take Alice out of her unhappy life and into an idealistic flight of fancy. She settles issues that are absorbingly genuine all the more because of their haphazard creativity.

You can imagine Woody Allen observing millionaire housewives in his home town and thinking, "God, they must be so bored. What do they do all day?" And he's smart enough to present their problems as minor but in their exceptionally privileged eyes big, as they don't tend to have the overwhelming problems of others anywhere in sight throughout their daily lives, and that is what Alice comes to realize.

Near the end, film presents us with a two-way street that includes a decision that would be logical but not so full of magic and vice versa, just as Dr. Yang tells her about the mind functioning without logic being full of romance but can have great pain as well, subtly presenting the stakes of the film's denouement.

Loved Mia Farrow's subtle seductress. And I naturally love and want to play all characters named Alice.
