Sure it looked cheap in some shots, but others i found it downright impressive. The story might drag along too long in the beginning but at least it takes the time to develop its characters.

(read more) I gotta admit, for YEARS, I passed this movie by, showing no interest whatsoever (I think mainly because the PG rating deterred me), but I was wrong to do so because Prophecy turned out to be an incredible horror movie. Yes, the movie has changed quite a bit, which will allow for several laugh out loud moments, but its got that really raw, gritty, 70's vibe to it. It serves as a monster movie, political statement, and slasher in the woods all mixed up into one as an EPA doctor and his pregnant wife visit a heavily wooded area in Maine to try and study the lumber industry and its struggle with the local Native Americans (lead by a really terrific and young Armand Assante) when they start to uncover strange behaviors in animal and wildlife until eventually a huge monster starts stalking, chasing, and tearing all of them to shreds. It's not just any monster, it's fucking ManBearPig, alive on the screen, just like Al Gore prophecized (hence the name of the movie). This film is terrific. Very dark, violent, and a bit gory for only being PG. It's well worth the 100 minutes, especially the very last scene before the credits role, which is a hoot.

As bears are already a terrifying force of scary nature, making them 20 feet tall and skinless just makes them more awesome. In fact all the bear stuff is more impressive than it has really any right to be, and the kid in the sleeping bag has an amazing death.

PROPHECY provides us with some top-notch performances by all parties involved and the story is both creative and compelling so I like to give Frankenheimer credit for that...

Where this film fails is in the presentation of the "monster" which looks like absolute crap.

I've seen better "creature effects" knocking on my door at Hallowe'en...

Of course... if you're the kind of person who goes to see a "monster" movie for the "monsters"... it's not really going to matter how well everybody acts in the film or how nice all the scenery looks, or how important the film's message is... if the "monster" looks like a guy in a cheap bearsuit...

You're gonna think the movie sucks....

Oh... But it wasn't just the "monster effects" that they cheaped out on... It was ALL the effects....

Note to the EFFECTS DEPARTMENT:

A DOWN-FILLED SLEEPING BAG CONTAINING A SLEEPING HUMAN BEING, WILL NOT EXPLODE AS IF FILLED WITH GRENADES AND C-4, WHEN THROWN AGAINST A ROCK WALL... !!!!!

(read more) Surprisingly sensitive to social and environmental issues, this beautifully shot monster movie offers the novelty of a strong cast as a contrast to the cheesy plot of a killer mutant bear running amuck. There is a surprising amount of character development to sit through before the bear gets her freak on, but thankfully, it is all rather engaging. The creature effects are fairly good considering the period, but no doubt hokey by today's tastes.

Most memorable scene: the bear bitch slaps a boy in a sleeping bag, which inexplicably explodes!
