Really a 6.5/10, Tim McCanlies' feature directorial debut is by no means an earth-shattering, important film, but it is quiet and entertaining.
This is a very sweet movie that I watched initially for Ethan Embry - who I absolutely adore! It's a great story about a day in the life of a small town, and a bonding of four friends. Touching.
Cute, clean family fun--although it might have been better if it departed from the "Disney" paradigm and got a little edge.
This is an incredibly well written and acted indie flick with buckets of small town charm to spare. I will officially state here; "Iam a Tim McCanlies fan!"

When was the last time a movie made you a better person? This one does. If you hear "sappy" or something like it from anyone who has seen this flick, you are speaking to a jaded, world-worn person.. Give them a hug and a bag of pop-corn and watch it again... together!!!

Slowly, people I know became aware of it by stumbling on it at the video store, in the discount bin at Wal Mart, on cable tv or through friends who recommended it. It's hard for me to say that everyone will love it (or even like it) because I cannot be impartial.
You see, I am a Texan.
I don't live in Texas anymore, I live in New York; yet there is something about Texas land that holds me down, that gives me strength. I would imagine that people who come from the country have a pull to nature, a connection to the earth; it just seems, though, that Texans are INCREDIBLY bound to their roots. All the Texans I know, whether they live in Texas or not, are proud of their heritage.
I was born in Texas.
This movie captures, perfectly, the beauty of the land and the beauty of the small Texas town. The storyline is original and enjoyable; and the relationships are real and trustworthy. There isn't a frame of the movie or a word of dialogue that I, as a movie goer and as a Texan, don't recognize as being truthful.
It doesn't hurt that the four leads are gifted actors, adept at the comedy AND the quieter moments of pathos and honesty. And they are pretty easy to look at, too.
Breckin Meyer is a movie goer's treasure.
Sometimes, on a sunny, summer, Saturday afternoon, right about two o'clock, when the air has stopped moving and the heat has reached its' highest point, I like to get ou the dvd of DANCER TEXAS POP 81 and settle down on the sofa with a pitcher of ice tea, hit the play button and think of home...
I only liked this movie because I got to help with it!!!! It was filmed in Fort Davis when I was working there.
Even had I not spent 3 years in West Texas, I would have enjoyed this movie. But, in light of my time in Midland (followed by a move to Los Angeles), I found a movie whose script "read my mail".
You don't have to be from a small town to appreciate this movie. It's funny, tender, and oh so Texan. This was the first DVD I ever bought and we've almost worn it out.
