Jane Grierson (Wiest), something of an expert on being brilliant but lonely, spots Fred's genius and wants to enroll him in her school for the gifted. It's a simple story, but it is very well told. Foster and Wiest both give excellent, sensitive performances, conveying the selfishness in each character's desire to have Fred to herself as well as the pain in not being able to fulfill all his needs on her own. Adam Hann-Byrd gives a remarkable performance as Fred, showing his intelligence without getting precious about it. Foster already shows a steady directing hand, but the best moments are the more whimsical ones in which she reveals the quiet exhilaration of Fred's mental leaps, as when a pool game suddenly becomes a beautiful collision of lines and forces. The DVD version shows the film in its original widescreen format and includes commentary from Foster. --Ali Davis

He seems lost and the only person that wants to lead him to a normal life is his mother played by Jodie Foster. The film is not perfect but it has many good moments that show how important emotional contact rather than not being loved is the best form. There are many instances where the movie shows this through the Dianne Wiest's character of always being alone not being with her parents. The Mathemagician who seemed to have an abusive father. Overall, the movie's message is positive and it is enjoyable to watch. The idea of what a genius goes through is an interesting subject.
Very good. Still enjoy this movie, however now it seems to run a little long.

The story shows beautifully what a thousand articles on math prodigies cannot- that even geniuses need love and that no matter how "genius" that child is he is still only a kid. And as Jodie Foster creates this little man who sees a lot and knows a lot but is only gradually beginning to understand a lot, we can hear echoes, perhaps, of a young girl who once found it more interesting to study French than get her picture in the fan magazines. One of the best actresses ever.
I have seen this by now several times - but it's still worth the time, even for third or fourth time!
Foster's directorial debut about a child genius. Small scale and warm hearted film which propably mirrors a lot of Fosters own experiences as a child actress. A bit too sentimental for my taste though.
