The gorgeous Ms. Connelly is conspicuously put on display in this typically lightweight fluff from writer-producer John Hughes. Frank Whaley does his best to liven up the male-fantasy plot about a semi-nerdy teen who gets a night-watchman job in a variety store, only to find himself locked in overnight with the local knockout (Connelly), who's as rich as she is beautiful. She's also really unhappy with her home life and her bully boyfriend (Dermot Mulroney), so it's Frank's big opportunity to make his move as a sympathetic Romeo. Shallow and contrived, the movie does have its standard moments of John Hughes delicacy, and a cameo by the late John Candy scores bonus points for comedy. Still, it's clear that the movie exists primarily to satisfy adolescent lust--and with Connelly as the object of desire, this otherwise tiresome comedy is a triumph of wish-fulfillment casting. --Jeff Shannon

Only positive is the stunning presence of Jennifer Connelly, in one of her earliest roles.

Unfortunately the film wasn't directed by him. it was made by an unknown called Bryan Gordon. Don't get me wrong, Gordon does a good job, but a few of the jokes are lost in the translation of the script. the story its self is a little forced and disjointed, but it most definitely packs the "feel good cheese" factor. Frank Whaley. An actor who never really got his break, but does a superb job of the lovable Jim Dodge. Jennifer Connely looks amazing all the way through, and not to sound shallow but generates most of the films appeal (check out the scene on the rocking horse!). Toped of with a quick cameo by the legend John candy, "Career Opportunities" isn't perfect, but if your a fan of John Hughes its certainly worth seeking out this rare gem.
Lame John Hughes written story starring the annoying Frank Whaley. Worth a watch (and more stars than it deserves) for seeing how beautiful Jennifer Connelly used to be when she wasn't too skinny.
Oh boy, this movie sucks but I enjoyed it a lot more than the Breakfast Club, so that is a plus.

This film is lame. Full of tired and repetitive jokes and two god-awful performances from the two crooks. One interesting part of the film is how ironic it is that is shows Target treating its employees horribly, since we all know stores such as Wal-Mart really do treat employees unethically. Still, I think Frank Whaley is the shit, and Jennifer Connelly is hot even though the film does its damnedest to make her unattractive with an awful wardrobe and drab location.
I Would Trully Loved To Live Out This Fantasy..Especially With Ms Connelly. It Would Be Like Christmas Time...Oh Yes!
Career opportunities is somewhat charming in conveying two lost teenage souls, but falls flat toward the end with the a bland plot and stupid villains.

A likable enough if slight little movie that's a bit too tense to be terribly funny, chiefly memorable for the scene where Connelly rides that coin-op horse.
I really liked this movie when I has 19. Subsequent viewings don't hold up, though.
Always nice to see a young Jennifer Connelly and i thought this movie although very dorky was pretty good!

A low budget film with not much to say, storyline is pointless but the script is intellectually smart and intriguing. Jennifer Connelly is so hot and beautiful in this, she looks like a Megan Fox back in those days
