But actually, the characters were all pretty interesting and their interactions were quite funny. The way it was shot, though, pulled me out of the world of the film; it was very obviously a period piece with fancy costumes and sets. There was nothing there to make it real. But, overall, it had an enjoyable story (although it was slow at points) and was surprisingly funny.

It was a bit too on the OTT side, with characters acting like they are in the middle of a ridiculous parody. It would have allowed more screentime to developing the love story between Sand and Chopin. As it were, the chemistry between Judy Davis and Hugh Grant was electrifying, and the little moments we do get to glimpse in the Sand/Chopin romance were rather well done. Not much needs to be said about the beauty of the soundtrack (hello, it's Chopin!). Added to that are the picturesque sets and the pretty costumes, which makes my period-heart happy. I only wished most of the acting didn't make me cringe all throughout (not the fault of the actors, though).
Excellent music, and great performance by Hugh Grant. What a beautiful movie!
i saw the 2nd hour, which held my interest. i'm guessing the first hour is better.
A wonderful flim about the relationship between freewilled female writer George Sand and the very concevative composer ChopinThis has a wonderful cast that make it a joy to watch.
One of my alltime favorite films =) Judy Davis was fantastic as George Sand & Julian Sands was his usual delectable self as Franz Listz... It's a flick i watch every Easter =)
judy davis is great as cigarette smoking, trouser wearing romancer of a 1800 French women! George Sands was very interesting figure.
A good portrayal, and yet lacking in the areas where you want more information. I was hoping it would be more about Chopin's life than hers, but sadly it isn't and from that it suffers.
Would someone _puh-leeeze_ help me find this on dvd, I am desperate.....
