(read more) "Colossus: The Forbin Project" is a sci-fi feature based upon the 1969 novel by Dennis Feltham Jones. The basic premise is that the supercomputer,Colossus, a creation of Dr Charles Forbin [Eric Braeden] and his team of scientists, develops independent thinking and assumes control of the world, trapping Forbin in an invisible prison, and basically destroying anything that crosses its' path.

The movie's premise reminded me of "Demon Seed", another movie where a supercomputer tries to assume control over humans [in particular one attractive woman] and their free will. This is also the precursor to movies like Terminator where we see how far computers can go if they achieve independent thought.

The DVD transfer here is a letdown being in full frame [pan n scan] rather than widescreen. A sci-fi classic like this deserves better treatment. But all in all, this is a must-watch for sci-fi fans despite being decades old.

One of the finest sci-fi films made to date. It easily surpasses most films in terms of plot, and it's writing (faithfully adapted from the book by D.F. Jones) is superb.

Great movie with many imitators. I saw bits and pieces of this movie on TV a while back and it took me years to find out the title. Glad I did.

Really well done cold war thriller about a super computer that takes over the world. Sounds dumb, and the computer is a joke, but it draws you in and you overlook it's dated appearance. Recommended.

For me, the most problematic scene was the one where two of the technicians are summarily executed at the orders of Colossus, for attempting to shut it down by overloading it's capacity. In America, where the right to due process is guaranteed in the Constitution, would they knuckle under to dictatorship so readily as to kill two of their citizens without even a trial? Even the Russian's willingness to murder one of their own top scientists at the behest of a machine seems to strecth credibility a little too far. Even if they were totally cowed by the power of Colossus, surely these executions could have been faked in such a way as to fool a computer?

The granddaddy of all computer-run-amok films. Even as dated as it is I still enjoyed this one, right up to the last five seconds. Recommended if you liked Andromeda Strain, Fail Safe, Dr. Stangelove, China Syndrome.

I liked every thing about this movie, one of the best scifi classics ever made in my eyes. The best part...the ending!

Terminator's Skynet and Wargames' Wopper both owe alot to this very good thriller.

Very believable and plausible story-line, with some fine acting.
