I'm glad Kevin Smith finally got this film out of his system. Now back to comedy.
Whatever, This Kevin Smith movie really isn't that bad. It's good. I liked it. Even though I can't stand Liv or Ben.
George Carlin was great, but wasn't even listed as a star according to this. He did very well, but Affleck's inability to act is a vortex of no escape.
The attempts at a joke are mostly bad and the story is quite cliched but it has a big warm heart and Smith excels at dialogue as usual. Affleck and Carlin deliver very solid performances.

Got a bad wrap when it was released, but it really is a nice little film...cast also includes Liv Tyler, George Carlin, Jason Biggs and Jennifer Lopez.
Lightweight and predictable, but Ben Affleck is still adorable as a clueless-but-loving father.

The story is a tad messy, the chemistry betweem Affleck and Liv Tyler is practically transparent, and some of the supporting characters (here's looking at you Jason Biggs) are annoying and inessential. Doesn't help that a very unrealistic scene (in which Will Smith makes a cameo appearance) ruins a could-have-been cute ending. For a better father-daughter dramedy - I recommend both 1973's "Paper Moon" and 2006's "Little Miss Sunshine" instead.
Critic Reviews
Inspired by Smith's own awe and amazement at being a father, the movie is modest and entertaining, with a minimum of sentimental goo, and it demands little of us except a good-natured willingness to go with it.full review
It's saved by an unusually charming child actor: Castro, who has a voice like a pan flute and a sweetly low-key screen presence.full review
Smith is trying to say something heartfelt, even as he's using formulas that are unworthy of him. Thus, Jersey Girl is a step, not a misstep.full review
It's the kind of movie Hugh Grant might make, except for the way Smith has with his dialogue, which is truer and more direct than we expect.full review
Affleck is modest and engaging, which keeps the movie out of Gigli territory. But it's close.full review
Smith's story is like a nightmare amalgam of decades of single-dad sitcoms: mawkish, cloying, and essentially bogus.full review
Kevin Smith's neuters his sense of humor for Jersey Girl, an old-fashioned ode to paternal love that shamelessly goes for its audience's tear ducts.full review
