If you're not a fan of narration then you should probably skip out on this, i'd say 80% of it is told in narration. Anne Bancroft is very good and Anthony Hopkins is outstanding. They have a few scenes where Bancroft talks directly to the camera and it doesn't work at all. But that is a minor problem in a very sweet movie.
Absolutly delicated and touching. Excellent screenplay.
It shows that a good movie doesn't need much money when you have a good story to tell.
I have a crash for epistolar books and movies.

What might appear as a "You've Got Mail" for the middle-aged turns out to be a thoughtful, well-performed film that does not pretend to be more than what it is -- a gentle relationship between two misplaced humans with an ocean in between.

The storyline about an American authoress exchanging letters with a bookshop in post-World War II London is not what makes the film so engrossing, it's everything else that's happening in the background like the archive footage of the Queen's coronation on the old black and white telly, and the shots of Westminster in the background. Totally charming!
A lovely toast to bookworms everywhere. It's the kind of simple story that makes you smile about living. Recommended for any rainy afternoon.

This not only was an incredible movie for the film lover, but also for the book lover in me. Anne Bancroft as the spunky, spirited, and book-loving Helene Hanff and Anthony Hopkins plays the kindly English bookseller, Frank Doel. Their correspondence and long-distance acquaintance spans years, book titles, and daily life anecdotes that endear us to the whole cast.
This is a favorite of my beloved and I. It's got everything a charming love story should have, including the tear-jerker ending. I didn't know it was based on a true story until after the fact--that changes the way I looked at things initially. A story like this is so amazing because it could never exist today. Twenty years of correspondence? Mail and letters? No, it couldn't exist now. But I wish it was possible.
