(read more) Its no secret, movies based on video games typically suck... and i mean suck hard! Mortal Kombat, is however, an average movie. Its definitely not a good film, but it does have some decent things going for it. This video game adaptation is about a group of martial arts masters who receive an invitation to compete against an army of majestic warriors in a tournament that will decide the fate of the world. The plot is taken straight from the fighting games, so its unoriginal and uninspired. Credit for sticking to the source material, points taken for lack of creativity. The movie features tons of characters from the games, but there in lies another problem. There are approximately 5 main characters all competing for screen time and development while sharing the screen with cameos from pretty much every other character in the game. It amounts to an unfocused script with little character development and tons of pointless and lengthy fights. With that being said, a majority of the fights are actually decent. They are fun to watch and keep most of the movie pretty entertaining. Set designs aren't too shabby either, pretty creepy and artistic. The special effects for 1995 are pretty good, they look quite dated today and some were dated even for the time, but they work on some levels. Unlike most video game movies which have little to no redeeming values, this one could actually amount to some cheesy and mindless entertainment... nothing more than that of course.

Even as a dumb teenager I knew this was a terrible movie but I loved the game so much...such disapointment

Classic fun as one of the first half-way decent video game movies, and one of Paul W.S. Anderson's first attempts at the switch-over genre from video game to film.

As a teen and avid MK player I hated this movie. Raiden is not an old white dude - he is the Asian god of Thunder!!!

Granted, it's based off a video game and they rarely do well, but this was done well. Good actors in it (for the most part), great (real) fighting, good story. REALLY for real - high black belt in at least one martial art. Very well done movie. Oh, and Christopher Lambert was awesome (and hysterical).
