(read more) This probably made a good pitch as it certainly sounds interesting on paper, but the execution is severely lacking. The performances are lackluster, the script is juvenile, and the effects are ridiculous. The concept is interesting in theory, as are the space time continuity issues given lip service here, but the director, writer, and actors seem to have conspired together to drain all the enjoyment and intrigue out of the story. I enjoyed the view into the life of an aircraft carrier and the always beautiful Katharine Ross, but that was it. The tone and style are all wrong; for a far better examination of the concept see numerous Star Trek episodes from any of the series. The final scene is interesting of course, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the film and it is even handled poorly. A failure through and through.

The Japanese surprise-attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941 that finally brought a reluctant U.S. into the war, is played out again, but this time with the possibility of intervention by a modern nuclear powered (and armed) American aircraft carrier that has mysteriously been transported back in time to the eve of the infamous attack. A thinly veiled 'wish' to re-write history pervades the movie; the national (U.S.) consciousness took a severe beating on that fateful December 7th 1941. Vietnam movies exude this same air as do the more recent spate of 9/11 movies, not least 'Flight 93'.
Lots of fast planes and general noise; very much a 'boys' movie even if Kirk Douglas is a little wooden as the captain of the U.S.S. Nimitz.

Unlike other twisty time-travel flicks, this one doesn't mess with your head as much it focuses on keeping viewers entertained thinking about the clever "what-if" scenario. After all, who wouldn't want to fight WWII planes with an F-14!? Some awesome aerial scenes and some decent (if inconsistent) cinematography also add to the quality of the film. An oldie but goodie.

Good, but builds up anticipation and suspense, and then just leaves you feeling a bit disappointed. A good 'What If? ' that just becomes a bit of a 'Why Bother?'

One of the first few movies to feature mordern US carriers. Love the plot, love the aircraft and love the flying. I've always wondered how it's going to be like with the Nimitz against the Jap Armanda in 1942. Wouldnt want to change history though.

Great movie. It shows its age but the plot and the delivery was awesome. There were some plot holes but they're easy to ignore. Awesome little 1980 movie. 8 outa 10.

Shifting Pearl Harbor back in time makes interesting viewing for those who, like me, love fantasy, as this is all about whether anyone can stop things happening that have actually happened already.

Aircraft carrier is transported back in time to the eve of Pearl Harbour attack. Classic time-travel dilemma of whether to intervene or allow events to take their natural course. Blue Underground did great job on the dvd release.

This movie appears to be an excuse to trot out vintage fighters and see how they look being chased by less vintage fighters. Silly, but mildly entertaining.
