No single-celled organisms, these alien invaders are the big-brained variety with a flair for ray guns and planetwide pandemonium. Citizens of Earth face their doom with gung-ho valor and brainless abandon as little green men from outer space gleefully terrorize the planet in an all-star, cross-country sci-fi comedy.

This film is just something awful, and I mean that it the most positive way possible. I'd watch it after a few brews, or whatever.

I had loved all his previous films but never knew who directed them. And I was also fond of watching those old 50's alien invasion flicks they used to show late at night on the sci fi channel. And lets not forget 6 months before this came out the juggernaut "Independence Day" came out. When this came out I was expecting a more serious interpretation of the story but wound up being amused by the intentionally comical set peices and the wry satire of modern life. Still it was always just a little too over the top and the whole ending of the movie just does not work. But I admire Tim Burton for trying something so different with all that money. Jack Nicholson steals the show as both the president and a sleazeball Las Vegas real estate agent. This film is better than most give it credit for. And Tim Burton still had the creative juices flowing through him to make this his own without seeming like stale bread.
Who would read this script and want to be in it? I guess there are a lot of celeberties that are greedy for more money.

It was basically Tim Burton doing a modern comedic take on 50's Sci-Fi B-movies. He had so many of the trademark elements of Sci-Fi B-movies. Everything from the contemplative, suave professor, played by Pierce Brosnan, to the ridiculous "special effects". This isn't supposed to be a super quality film, it's just supposed to be fun and I think it does an excellent job. Tons of big names in the cast. Jack Nicholson even plays two characters!
Perfect parody of all the 50s science fiction movies, the ones with the flying saucers on wires and stuff. Tim Burton crafted a smashing dark comedy.

Martians show up on earth and, well, ATTACK! Ok, not right away. First they lie and claim they come in peace, and naturally all the brain dead hippies and new age morons jump for joy, completely ignorant of the possibility that the Martians have bad intentions. Bwahahahaha. Jack Nicholson is the president and at point delivers a funny appeal to the Martians for peace, then they melt him. Hilarious!
The only thing more amusing than the overall story is the way the Martians talk. RAC-RAC-RAC-RAC-RAC! You won't be able to stop imitating them after seeing this, you'll want to do it to random people on the street and prank call your friends with it. Pierce Brosnan is here too, as an egotistical reporter, haha.
Really funny, with a fantastic ensemble cast and one of the best alien invasion movies, it oozes pure 50s sci fi b movieness!!!
Awfully outdated VFX (even when it was made, the VFX were crap - and not retro, just plain crap) and messy story, but still charming in some level.
A classic hilarious movie in the same vein of comedy as Airplane!, this has an amazingly star-studded cast for such an absurd aim. A ton of fun. Jack Nicholson is perfect.
I know it's not Burton's best work, but I find it to be a lot of fun...an easy watch with an All-star cast...
Really meant for those who love to watch bad movies. A wonderful send up of B-films and filled with so many big names
Despite its all-star cast (or perhaps because of it), this film, in many respects, is less entertaining than an average B-movie. And the ending is beyond stupid.

First he made Ed Wood, a tribute to the man fondly recalled as the worst movie director of all time. Now Tim Burton seems to have made a tribute to Wood's work.full review
