A really decent and quirky little flick with a colourful array of likeable characters and a cool sense of connection (Dante shoots the entire film on one street) akin to 'Rear Window' and 'Friday'. It's laced with typical slapstick 80's humour but most of it just doesn't work, the horror elements are done well but sadly there just isn't enough of them.
The plot focuses on an American estate where a new family has moved into but they only come out at night and have been witnessed digging in their backgarden at night. The bored men start to become paranoid and take it upon themselves to find out just what this weird family is up to. Too much of the comedy is way over the top, everybody overacts completely and everything is far too cheesy. When the horro elemnts of teh house and family are focused on it's quite fun, there is some decent effects and a good build up. Too son we are back in slapstick territory again as the charcaters do ever more stupid things. The ending is terrible, there is no big final scene the film just ends.
Far such a cult classic it really was a disappointing watch, average at best.
another great comedy from the 80's, the whole cast play great parts from Art the fat loud neighbour, rumsfield the slightly shellshocked ex vietnam vet, to ricky the spaced out typical teen...and lets not forget the psychopathic clopecks!
A film I like far more than it probably deserves because I watched it as a child and it brings a feeling of warmth with its familiarity.

Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) has new neighbours, the Klopeks. No one has seen them because they only come out at night to dig in the back garden as strange noises and lights emanate from their basement while the rest of the house is falling apart. When the resident grumpy old man goes missing, Ray and his other neighbours suspect the Klopeks.
The comic use of music and the style spoofing the horror/thriller genre mixed with a funny and atmospheric script really makes it a lot of fun. It eats its cake but still manages to keep it, by double bluffing us at the ending, enabling it to go for both solutions, satisfying its satirical point, without undermining all the effort the plot has built up.
However, it is just a piece of fluff with no substance, it is far too short even with two endings, and some of the characters (I'm looking at the aggressive Rumsfield (Bruce Dern) here) are just dislikeable. This is like the dessert that leaves you unfulfilled because you didnât have any dinner, but it still tastes good.
One of my all time favourites. Fantastic cast. Bruce Dern and Rick Ducommun are fantastic alongside Tom Hanks.
This film is an all time classic that never gets boring or unfunny, There is so much going on in the background that you need to watch it more than once to pick up on everything that is going on and the casting is just perfect.
i must say it on all hanks early movies i loved it when i was a kid and still do great cast great story a classic
