The Importance of Being Earnest (2002)
Anna Massey, Charles Kay, Colin Firth
Two young gentlemen living in 1890's England use the same pseudonym on the sly, which is fine until they fall in love with women using that name, which leads to a comedy of mistaken identities.

(read more) A classic adaptation of Oscar Wilde's timeless satire, this movie is just great all around, with powerhouse performances from Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon and Frances O Connor, as well as a number of supporting actors that I won't list here for the sake of brevity. The jokes are snappy and clever, relying, as in the original Wilde screenplay, entirely on dialogue, and those who don't know the story already are really in for a treat, as this is just full of good stuff all around. Highly recommended.
One of my favorite plays! Such an amazing cast. Everyone was wonderful. Judi Dench was perfect in her role. This is a film that must be seen!
False advertising: Ernest isn't even in this movie! Just a bunch of dumb brits.
A great team of actors seem to be having a lot of fun in this classic Oscar Wilde play.
Yay for the humor of Oscar Wilde! Really great cast!! Colin Firth is awesome <3
The cast is maybe less than perfect but you can be sure to have Wilde's wit tickling you pink!
Critic Reviews
Rupert Everett gets Wilde in his bones, but this well-cast adaptation somehow feels obvious and overblown.full review
Even half-baked, "Earnest" is still delicious.full review
To take a big fat wrecking ball to one of the surefire delights of world theater -- well, that requires energy and invention ... Oliver Parker does that here, and the result is a frustrating, boring mess.full review
The Importance of Being Earnest, so thick with wit it plays like a reading from Bartlett's Familiar Quotationsfull review
Parker pushes a bit -- who knew Earnest had a love duet sung by Algy and Jack? -- but he proves this vintage bubbly hasn't lost its fizz.full review
