When she shoots her philandering husband, she lands on Chicago's famed murderess row, retains Chicago's slickest lawyer, Billy Flynn, and becomes the center of the town's most notorious murder case--only increasing her celebrity. Roxie Hart, seduced by the city's promise of style and adventure, dreams of singing and dancing her way to stardom. When Roxie's abusive lover tries to walk out on her, she too ends up in prison. The ambitious Billy recognizes another made-for-tabloids story, and postpones Velma's court date to take on Roxie's case. Infamy is Roxie's ticket to stardom. Billy turns her crime of passion into celebrity headlines, and in this town, where murder is a form of entertainment, she becomes a bona fide star--much to Velma's chagrin. As Roxie fashions herself out to be America's latest sweetheart, Velma has more than a few surprises in store for her. Tensions climax as the two women stop at nothing to outdo each other in their obsessive pursuit of fame and celebrity.

Great film watched it again on the plane home. really looked good on a tiny screen oddly enough.
Plenty of musicals have turned into films... Chicago is one of those, but a rare delight.

I enjoyed it. It can definitely compete for awards. Renee Zellweger gave her all. My favorite character was Amos (played by John Reilly), Roxie's devoted husband. I wish to watch the other nominees for the Academy Best Picture 2002 so I could compare and see if this really deserved the highest award.
Could not finish it. What I saw of it was impressive, but not enjoyable.
Some of this was slick and stylish and highly competent but I just couldn't get into it. I was falling asleep late at night, maybe that was part of it. The other part, I'm not into musicals.
An exemplary adaptation. It takes its source material, makes necessary modifications for film and even adds more substance. It's the very rare instance when the movie's even better than the stage show.

The costumes look stunning, the choreography is wonderful and who knew Richard Gere and John C Reilly could sing. The movie struggles to keep up the excitement for much of the movie, and the story isn't too involving, but there is too much symbolism, energy and thoughtfulness to not call Chicago one of the better musicals of this millennium. The musical number all represent the actions and thoughts of the characters which i thought was ingenious. There is also the issue of a lust for fame and how it can blind you from what people really think. I liked all of the performances, and some of the dance numbers were very inventive and smart. Basically when your in Chicago, you need to get famous or else you will get nowhere, and in this case, you must be famous to get out of jail. While the movie burst onto the screen with intense opening numbers, the movie is very slow and downcast with its tone for the rest of the movie. I wish it had kept the electricity for much more of the film and i would have enjoyed it more. Still, this is an incredibly visionary and smart musical, and dare i say I am actually interested to see what Rob Marshall can do next with his new movie Nine coming out in December with Daniel Day Lewis. Chicago is not for everyone, but the power and symbolism of the singing and dancing is going to pull you into the thick of it. Thumbs up!
Sex, murder, greed, what more can you ask for? Does a great job retaining the stage presentation while utilizing all the tricks of film. Excellent music with fantastic choreography too.

Leggy Zeta-Jones is so hot in the 'All That Jazz' number, she's flammable. And Zellweger defines delicious.full review
Rob Marshall's film of Chicago isn't just the most explosively entertaining movie musical in a couple of decades. It's going to be the most influential.full review
Overall, Chicago earns that highest of praises -- I can't wait to see it again.full review
Chicago is everything a musical is supposed to be, with good songs sung by people who sing well, and with lots of sexy dances featuring women who are gorgeous and men who don't get in the way.full review
Chicago is sophisticated, brash, sardonic, completely joyful in its execution.full review
The movie is appealing, thanks to the cleverness of the Kander-Ebb songs and the enthusiasm of the performances, but it lacks any urgency or erotic spark.full review
