Samaire was born in Japan and lived there for several years (learning judo in the process) before moving to Hawaii
and, later, Arizona. She began acting in high school, and enrolled at the
University of Arizona to major in costume design and theater,
but left after a year. Her name, which means "dawning sun" in Gaelic, is technically pronounced Sah-mee-rah, though her parents pronounced it "Sam-air" for 3 months until they were taught how to pronounce it in its proper Gaelic form.
