Biography: Janis Joplin got interested in folk music in high school, but it wasn't until she was studying at University of Texas that she started performing herself and touring a bit around the state. She got wide recognition through the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and Woodstock in 1969. She died in late 1970 from an accidental drug overdose.
