Gene Kelly first gained famed on Broadway,
starring in Rodgers and Hart's landmark musical "Pal
Joey" in 1940 before heading to Hollywood and making
his debut opposite Judy Garland in "For Me and My Gal"
in 1942. He is best known for his musical roles, in
trademark films like "Singin' in the Rain," "On the
Town," and "An American in Paris," but he made
impressive turns in a few "straight" roles, including
one in 1960's "Inherit the Wind." He died of
