Reviews I've Written

  • 1984
    George Orwell, Orwell, X

This is probably the most horrific and unhappy piece of literature I have read for a good long while. Orwell's famous novel of a frightening future dystopia seems all the more closer to realization, though we have long passed the year 1984. His poignant pictures of the abuse of power, man controlling man even to the point of his thoughts, censorship, stagnant social dilemmas, a never-ending war and even torture are powerful indeed. But I think that was the author's intention all along. This k... (show more)

This is probably the most horrific and unhappy piece of literature I have read for a good long while. His poignant pictures of the abuse of power, man controlling man even to the point of his thoughts, censorship, stagnant social dilemmas, a never-ending war and even torture are powerful indeed. But I think that was the author's intention all along. This kind of story demands a brutally unhappy ending, if only to point out the terrible authority of the Party and Big Brother all the more.
It kept me reading, certainly, but it was not the kind of book I would like to pick up and read again. It was almost a painful read, though eye-opening. 1984 causes you to examine the world's destiny as mankind would have it from a completely new perspective. It's hauntingly realistic imagery will remain with me for years. (show less)

  • The Time Machine
    H.G. Wells

Literally, I could not put it down, not until I turned that last page in the wee hours of the morning! The Time Machine accomplished what most science-fiction novels fail at: subtlety (in my opinion, too much sci-fi does too much explaining than showing) and innovation. I suppose it has the fact that it is now over a century old going for that latter of the two, but H.G. Wells here produced a futuristic world vastly different from any other. Heck, even that shoddy 2002 film version severely destroyed Wells' future worldview. But in his Time Machine tale, there is mysterious, well-thought-out future of a decaying humanity, not filled with flying cars and immense city-utopias, but with very inhuman creatures, all of them frightening for their warped and near humanity. While, I might not believe the same naturalistic principles which guided Wells' imagination toward this future of his, I do find it a vivid and powerful picture, more so than any future-realm sci-fi has yet to conjure up. Wells, you've made a masterpiece! (show less)

  • Watership Down: A Novel
    Richard Adams

If you're expecting a cute and cuddly story about cute and cuddly bunnies, you, sir, are as sadly mistaken as I was when I began to read Watership Down. It is a frightening and dark tale, rather, of animals with all too human personalities.
