  • My Red Blood: A Memoir of Growing Up Communist,...
    Alix Dobkin

Covering her years growing up as a red diaper baby, through college and beyond into her marriage, the memoir does not cover the lesbian feminist music scene but covers in detail the epoch Alix lived before that. She names those she knew, the places they played, and tells tales of a bygone era. A valuable look at the positive side of growing up communist in the usa.

Terrific portrait of Frances Perkins, arguably the most persuasive longtime proponent of landmark New Deal legistation and policy for FDR and who became the first woman Cabinet Minister as his Secretary of Labor. Despite focusing on FDR's Inner Circle and the First 100 Days, Cohen manages to give a sense of the dangerous mood of the country, illustrating with examples. As an activist she dorked tirelessly without emotion until she realized to heal she needed to acess the frozen emotions; the reading, ti a largely Asian group of feminist activists, stimulated others to share, like the early CR sessions of long ago, from which women learned about and shared systemic opresssion. The images like the cover photo of a tree growing through rock canyon are exceptional on their own. (show less)
