  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Order of the Phoenix was far and away the best Potter book at the time of release and could possibly be the best stand alone novel in the entire series. While it is the longest book in the entire series I found that it actually read much easier the Goblet of Fire. While it is the longest book in the entire series I found that it actually read much easier the Goblet of Fire. The introduction of the Ministry of Magic and much more impotently the Department of Mysteries brings the realization that the magical world Rowling has brought to life is much like the world we live in today. The Potter novels are made to grown with the reader and this is a perfect example. We see the introduction of relationships as well as politics. As the books get more "adult" the also get darker. While death has been a constant theme in the series the death near the end of the book truly hits home letting the reader know that anything is possible in this series. The only let down to Order of the Phoenix to me is that Rowling build this amazing Department of Mysteries with amazing rooms that many thought were the entire basis of the magical world. I compare the Department of Mysteries to tombs of the Vatican in Angels and Demons. Regretfully Rowling never brings us back these magical rooms or that mysterious Arch that will always have me for one guessing. (show less)

  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Another amazing novel by JK Rowling. Goblet of Fire again bring us into the Magical things that can happen at Hogwarts. In this novel we are introduced to new characters, the Quidditch world cup, and the Tri-wizard tournament. The majority of this novel revolves around the tournament. I find at times it drags in the middle after an amazing into with the world cup. The book overall is quite possible last on my list of Potter books; Sorcerers Stone would most likely be my least favorite however... (show more)

I find at times it drags in the middle after an amazing into with the world cup. The book overall is quite possible last on my list of Potter books; Sorcerers Stone would most likely be my least favorite however it is the first novel so that would give it the nod over Goblet. While it does have a Great ending this novel does little to advance and already massive plot. Many people often draw comparisons among the Potter series. One of these is that the 7 books can be looked at as one much larger book. If that holds true then this book would be the Middle and it very much reads like a middle book. Amazing beginning amazing ending and just a lot of words in the middle. (show less)

This is far and away one of my favorite books of the Harry Potter Series. Again we are pulled away from the hated Voldemort and presented with a completely new "villain" and the best character in the entire series Sirius Black. While the Potter story mostly turns into a more adult tale in the 5th book this is the first book that has a darker feel. This is far and away one of my favorite books of the Harry Potter Series. While the Potter story mostly turns into a more adult tale in the 5th book this is the first book that has a darker feel. While the first two books can be viewed as a thorough entrance into Rowling's magical world, this story begins digs more into Harry's personal life and more of his back story. It is a nice look as we have just learned a good deal about Voldemorts back story in the previous book. Over all this is my 3rd favorite in the series behind Deathly Hallows and Half-Blood Prince. Rowling herself has said that both DH and HBP could be looked at as half's of one story therefore one could argue that this is the best stand alone novel Rowling has written. (show less)
