  • Independent People
    Halldor Laxness

A magnificent book that contains all of life between its covers—the indomitable human spirit, an outsized landscape, a richly imagined family and a feisty community of characters, all plunging headlong into battles with nature, class, culture and tradition. Here you'll find burning ambition, contests of wills, laugh-out-loud humor, love, lust, sorrow, alienation, reconciliation, wily politics, and economic triumphs and struggles—with the overarching theme of longing to lead an independent lif... A magnificent book that contains all of life between its covers—the indomitable human spirit, an outsized landscape, a richly imagined family and a feisty community of characters, all plunging headlong into battles with nature, class, culture and tradition. Here you'll find burning ambition, contests of wills, laugh-out-loud humor, love, lust, sorrow, alienation, reconciliation, wily politics, and economic triumphs and struggles—with the overarching theme of longing to lead an independent life. And sheep! The book feels timeless, with its Icelandic sagas, magical myths, poems and stories, and intimate rendering of ways of life that have been around for a thousand years. And yet it also feels very contemporary, very much in touch with modern family dysfunction and relevant to the topics of our times. Independent People is a great story, gorgeously written and compulsively readable. One of the best books I have ever read—the kind that you are sorry to see end, the kind you start again as soon as you've finished. Reminds me very much of Kristen Lavransdatter, by Sigrid Undset, another of my favorite books of all time. (show less)

  • The Yiddish Policemen's Union
    Michael Chabon

Great fun, a rollicking read. Coincidentally, I also happen to be reading Plato's Republic. I was astonished to discover that Chabon has taken up the Socratic challenge of examining the nature of justice by creating an imaginary city-state and probing how good and evil play out in the lives of the purveyors and betrayers of justice. The book goes after the "What is it?" and "What if?" questions and never lets go.

The alternate reality Chabon creates is richly satisfying, though at times far-fetched. But it's as much a whodunnit in the classical, Sam Spade sense as it is a philosophical musing, so the wild flights of fantasy can be forgiven--in fact, savored. It's also a love story and a story of personal, family, religious and national identity, with every character in the thick of the struggle for understanding, revenge or redemption. In short, this is a book to sink your mind and your imagination into. (show less)

  • Out Stealing Horses: A Novel
    Per Petterson

Exquisite novel. Breathtaking writing, suspenseful narrative, brilliant construction that juxtaposes the protagonist's experiences, feelings and understandings as a boy and as an old man. A profound meditation on identity, youth, nature, tragedy, grief, rage, desire, secrets, relationships, choices and aging--in short, one man's coming to terms with a full life. Highly recommended.
