Dr Hanson weaves a narrative threading its way from 420BC through today. This book plus "The Western Way of War" offer invaluable insight into the challenges of democracy during conflict (Akin to Revel), their difficulties of fighting insurgencies and the issues pertaining to conflict extended over time. Moreover his ability to relate the facts of history to current context make otherwise difficult topics readily digestible for the lay-reader. Other reviewers have commented on the superior discussion of Peloponnesian strategy and tactics but Hanson's discourse extends well beyond a simple "feint left attach right" monologue. It's too easy to dismiss Hanson as a thought-leader among neo-conservatives. He is a man of the land with an incredible intellect. His life experiences allow him to discuss the history of conflict in deeply personal ways. His uncle and namesake who died in the Second World War; the economics of farming as an adjunct to his teaching and writing career. This is an author who should be read regularly. (show less)
