  • Lord of the Flies
    William Golding

Very interesting exploration of the basic societal / psychological drives. Delves into the basic mechanisms of power, hierarchy, hatred, hope, fear, "friendship", leadership. Human society is intensely complex, even in it's most stripped down, desert-island scenarios. Are "civilized" grown-ups in uniforms with submarines and bombs more "civil" than painted children "playing" at hunting, war, and survival with clay-painted faces and sharpened sticks? ... • How to Be Good
    Nick Hornby

I probably found this book more interesting than many people might-- that is, recently divorced, and some of my life I have been much like David (the husband). Still, it is an interesting essay on the topic, How to Be Good. No easy answers here, and though the book rambles, I believe that accurate portrays the reality that answers to that question do tend to be rambling... It's good to try to be good, but it isn't simple or easy to figure out how to actually do it.

  • A Thousand Splendid Suns
    Khaled Hosseini

Amazing story, made me cry in public. With the story of 2 women, and a few short historical references, brought alive the history ans struggles of the last 50 years in Afghanistan.
