  • Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return
    Marjane Satrapi

Satrapi focuses here on the inbetweeness of being a third-worlder in the first world, and then returning to Iran to find herself a first worlder in the third world. She feels ashamed of not having made more of her experience, but can't tell her friends and family, who have been surviving a war while she was in Vienna, about her inner life. Satrapi gives us self-revelation without self-pity, resulting in a clear-eyed look at the incredible confusion of the refugee's return.

I can't get enough of Satrapi. The striking visuals, the tight stories, the window into the nuance and contradiction of life in Iran. • The Good Thief
    Hannah Tinti

Dickensian. It's not a bad story, but why tell one with orphans, grave robbers, and evil factory owners when you could chronicle on the social ills of your times instead of Dickens'? Why tie it all up with a nice little bow? NOt sure what is gained by the pastiche here.
