  • My Sister's Keeper: A Novel
    Jodi Picoult, Picoult Jodi

Having heard the hype built around "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult, I confess that I was hoping this novel was going to hold much more weight than it actually did. The plot revolves around a child who is being asked by her parents to donate a kidney to her cancer-striken sister and the legalities behind claiming yourself "medically emancipated".

The novel is well researched and the plot moves pretty rapidly from past to present. It's just the cliche metaphors that failed to capture (to me) the plight that young Anna was undergoing. Everything seems to flow back to some childhood Hallmark greeting card as if this honed in on some inner-psyche that the author could fail to provide to us in the current dialogue. By the end, when she went so far as to compare everyone to a constellation, it became too much. The medical jargon seemed real, the people did not.

I have not seen the adaptation as of yet but do feel that much more could have been done from a medical perspective with the character of Kate. Someone told me that the movie ends differently, and having heard that, I can't help but think this would have hit the point home more. Driveling on and on about "accidental death speak" and a mother who fails to understand didn't really make me feel anything toward the one person everyone in this book was trying to save. You definitely get Anna doesn't want her sister to die. You just didn't feel anything about it. There was LOTS about the "sister's keeper" but only a few chapters even remotely dedicated to "the sister". No digging to China or unruly stories about a family torn apart is going to make me feel that.

"My Sister's Keeper" is as cliche as the title reads. (show less)

  • Daddy
    Danielle Steel

In “Daddy” ―Danielle Steel’s 25th Novel― the author paints a story of a rich ad executive coming to terms with the loss of his family structure. The foundation of the plot unravels in the first chapter and jumped back and forth between his wife, Sarah, and the past that they had just experienced. You almost begin to wonder if the book is going to revolve around this selfish woman who keeps screaming “me! me! me!” all the time or if everything will eventually weave back into the book’s namesak... You almost begin to wonder if the book is going to revolve around this selfish woman who keeps screaming “me! me! me!” all the time or if everything will eventually weave back into the book’s namesake.

Once mom leaves the picture, the book began to pick up for me. “Daddy” is definitely on par for this author’s work. A lot of heated sex and one psychological drama after another, it’s typical mindless reading and escapism. Not much of the book felt unnecessary and you get to experience the romance and intrigue Danielle Steel is known for. I especially liked the paring of 3 generations of men coping with their own sense of fatherhood as well. Hearing that there was a TV Movie of this makes me want to see it now.

It wasn’t the best romance story I’ve ever read but Ms. Steel has definitely penned worse. It was good. (show less)

  • The Shawl
    Cynthia Ozick

A haunting tale of a mother clinging to the memory of her dead daughter, "The Shawl" represents so much more than a a small piece of fiction. This novella by Cynthia Ozick is a traumatic representation of a history far too many people choose to forget. It feels uncomfortable as you pass through each line. And the character of Rosa sinks so profoundly into your psyche, I ended up crying for virtually all of the last 15 pages.

    Such a strong brilliant piece.
