Reviews I've Written

  • Pride And Prejudice And Zombies
    Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith

I think the premise of this book is more entertaining than the book itself. I thought/think it's a great concept, but it falls flat in execution.

One detail that REALLY bothered me was the fact that Grahame-Smith alluded to the fact that the countryside had been plagued with "dreadfuls" for the past 50 years ... yet, there are several passages that reference "newly-buried" type zombies. Hellllllloooooo, if the zombie uprising was 50 years in the making do you honestly think that new corpses would continue to be buried??? He depicts burning fields where zombies are exterminated, so it's a huge fail to somehow assume that cremation of non-zombie corpses would not have been in practice across the nation as a safety precaution. It seems like a small quibble but this is really a gigantic lapse of logic on the author's part.

My biggest overall complaint is that after the first 100 pages or so there is basically no further zombie action. Yes, there are zombie shout-outs, but essentially no action scenes (I'm not counting the ninja vs ninja scenes because A. there are no zombies and B. they're boring).

If you have a plane ride or an afternoon to kill it's worth reading (still better than a lot of movies/TV shows I can think of), I would borrow it rather than purchase. The main reason I'm keeping my copy is that I think the cover art is stupendous and so I can loan it to friends and save them the $15. (show less)

My boyfriend has the more recent edition (2006 75th anniversary version) and got tired of me borrowing it all the time. So, he bought me one of my own, but the only version available was this older 1997 one.

It's still an AMAZING resource in the kitchen, but I much prefer the 2006 edition. The 1997 edition is full of low fat options, which I find irritating since I mostly use it for baking (I want dessert, dig?). The 1997 edition is full of low fat options, which I find irritating since I mostly use it for baking (I want dessert, dig?). I don't feel it's as well organized as the newer edition - I do a lot more searching through the index. There are also way too many Christmas cookie recipes ... I like to make cookies all year! Another small quibble, the font is different and looks kind of overly 90s teen. I almost expect the i's to be dotted with hearts :)

All that being said, I'm still a fan and would never consider taking this book out of my kitchen. Just wish he had splurged and bought me the 2006 edition! (show less)
