  • The Mammoth Hunters
    Jean M. Auel

12/09: The characters are still endearing and the plot is still interesting after thousands of pages. Auel introduces new concepts and characters that impress and she even introduces a love triangle to the mix. Again, there are some graphic descriptions of sexuality here (though not as many as are found in the second novel) and I can't recommend this to those who find such things offensive. I will say the sex scenes are pretty repetitive and a bit funny if read with the hilarity of a cheap Fabio romance novel in mind. (show less)

12/09: Still imaginative, but not as good as the first novel. Ayla never ceases to amaze with her accomplishments. I think it is a mistake for Auel to clear up the ambiguity on whether Ayla is being guided by supernatural means. I also think there are quite a few liberties taken with the order in which inventions took place. Alas, the novel sinks into cheap harlequin romance form before the end and therefore completely cheapens Ayla's emotions and experiences. Overall the novel is not b... (show more)

Overall the novel is not bad, but I cannot recommend it to those who find graphic sexual situations offensive. (show less)

  • The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children)
    Jean M. Auel

11/09: Surprisingly, I have never read any fiction set in the days of the cave man. The novel is fresh and interesting, both imaginative and creative. Auel mixes science and the supernatural together in a marriage that seems plausible enough to be true. The characters are endearing and the plot is engaging the whole way through. Recommended to all.
