Admission
While well-written this book desperately needed a better editor to remove the superfluous and repetetive material and to improve the pacing. Only the third section moved along briskly and with purpose. The story's revelations can be figured out much sooner than the main protagonist is able and that proved frustrating. Most of all, the author just kept finding new ways to say the same thing over and over and over again. I couldn't wait for this book to just end!

Blubber
Judy BlumeI read this book when I was a child and I just finished re-reading it after all of these years. Great book with a not-so likeable but truthful lead character in a situaiton that depicts the point when kids really become mean. Even moreso, Blume--back in 1974, no less--has honestly shown us the now labeled "mean girls" social culture. Excellent work.

For a book this exceedingly well-written, it has a lousy sense of plotting as it's torpid pace made me nearly want to give up on it several times. Motivations for people and events and the arrival of certain characters are murky at best. Even the reason for the book's title escapes me. But, there is a creeping menace that really does pay off in the book's final third where we are rewarded with an exciting page-turner of a climax plus the arrival of a truly terrifying pair of psychopaths named "The Prefects." The last 100-150 pages were good enough to make me want to try the sequel but it was those first 200-250 pages that were such a slog. (show less)
