Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Joanne K. RowlingI now write from the perspective of one who's been completely transformed by this series. I watched every Harry Potter movie from one to six as they each came out, and in less than a month after the last one, couldn't remember a thing about the plot, people, or how they all tied together. When a friend and a cousin prompted me to start the series, I was really surprised at how much I've come to enjoy it, and how spectacularly insignificant the movies are in comparison. When a friend and a cousin prompted me to start the series, I was really surprised at how much I've come to enjoy it, and how spectacularly insignificant the movies are in comparison. I do like the films quite a bit, that is true, but I urge anyone who likes the movies to Read. The. Books.
As for this book specifically, I think it was a tad too angsty for my taste. Utterly enjoyable nonetheless. Loved the entire Quidditch World Cup experience, the extended court trials from the pensieve, and most of all I loved Snape being Snape. Had me sniffling during a certain someone's demise, I admit, which is more than I can say for movie-version. But again, I repeat: Read the books! (show less)

Water: Tales of Elemental Spirits
Robin McKinleyDo I even need to say it? Robin McKinley's were the better of the tales. This is a good collection of merpeople and sea creature stories, but I didn't enjoy the ones by Dickinson half so much as McKinley's. She just has a way with words that makes everyone else pale in comparison, and the contrast is even more obvious when the other stories are sandwiched in between hers.

Cameron DokeyI've read numerous retellings of Beauty and the Beast, including the two by favorite authoress Robin McKinley, and I do believe this one reaches near the top of the list, though in its own unique way. It's not so lengthy or descriptive as either "Rose Daughter" or "Beauty" and could never match them entirely, but it's not quite fair to compare them and "Belle" certainly carries its own charm and appeal. Belle's family life is realistic and endearing, her character interesting, the story is written exquisitely, and the Beast is adorable. Certain parts were so sweet they made me cry. And I don't cry often for books. However, I was disappointed in the fact that the Beast doesn't even enter the scene until over halfway through the smallish two-hundred page book. I'm suprised the relationship between Beauty and the Beast didn't seem more rushed because of the small amount of time they had together, but somehow it managed to make sense. Beast should have been in it more, but other than that, I loved it. (show less)
