    Alexander McCall Smith, McCall Alexander

This is the second book I have read in this series, and I am definitely warming up to Mma. Ramotswe and the beautiful country of Botswana. Don't be fooled by Alexander McCall Smith's simple prose. I've sampled some of his other work and he is a very intelligent and well-rounded writer; and, as you may notice if you read the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books, he is a master of character. I think what I like best is his ability to portray his characters in ways that are both simple and complex, letting the reader be the judge of their actions

The underlying sense of morality, combined with the outward acts of kindness, wrongdoing, and forgiveness, makes the Kalahari Typing School for Men feel more profound than you would expect. A competing detective agency, a child's rebellion, a secretary's entrepreneurial venture, a man's belated attempt for atonement, and a complicated romance all somehow come together in a way that solidifies the thematic unity of the series.

This is a great read for advanced bibliophiles and recreational readers alike, as the prose, although very easy to follow, is far from simple. (show less)

  • A Thousand Acres: A Novel
    Jane Smiley

I have no problem reading or viewing modern-day adaptations of classic tales, as long as it is tasteful, entertaining, and/or well done. The more you read A Thousand Acres, the more this book resembles King Lear. There is so much unspoken angst that at times I was actually afraid to turn the page for fear that life in this small 1970s farming community would get even worse. And it did! Tragic and moving, just the way Shakespeare liked it, with touches of betrayal and sinister acts unraveled... (show more)

And it did! Tragic and moving, just the way Shakespeare liked it, with touches of betrayal and sinister acts unraveled. What I liked most about the characters is that although their livelihoods are dependent on their flat, manipulated, rural surroundings -- a world that is more or less unchanged for three generations, they are surprisingly dynamic (sometimes shockingly so). Just when you think you know which sister is the true Cordelia, you are forced to doubt whether there even is one. There is more to this story than just a modern retelling. And when you close the book for the last time, you are, helplessly, left with a sense of obligation to set things right. (show less)
