Battlelines
Tony AbbottGarbage. I have little enthusiasm for this book. I had expected a defence of 'pragmatic conservatism' that would help me appreciate it, if not exactly sway me over. But I did not find this, and instead found a large degree of hypocrisy.

Garbage. I have little enthusiasm for this book. I had expected a defence of 'pragmatic conservatism' that would help me appreciate it, if not exactly sway me over. But I did not find this, and instead found a large degree of hypocrisy.
The earlier part of the book, about his life, comes across as dishonest. Not a blatant dishonesty, such as denying or ignoring facts, but a targeted mini-biography with every sentence seemingly worded to give a particular, censored, view of Abbott's life. Although it is perhaps farfetched to compare his mini-biography to Obama's, the President's book is far more self-honest in this way--not said for image or political gain but just straight truth.
The middle of the book is then a declaration of political ideals and beliefs, and I was most enamoured with it. I agree wholeheartedly with the 'fusion' of conservatism and liberalism that makes the party so prosperous and representative of ordinary Australians while having a principled base of values to rely on.
But the end of the book, where a political programme is laid out, is, in Abbott's words, "bullsh--t". It is a complete contradiction to the political values of liberalism and conservatism laid out earlier and seems instead to be a pandering to populism and his own prejudices. The manifesto is radical, pragmatic, and unprincipled. It hits at socialism being done badly and how to make socialism work better, not for a liberal/conservative alternative. This is best illustrated in the states debate, where Abbott just wants complete commonwealth control. Since the problem--as he rightly points out--is a gap between money and responsibility, shouldn't the answer be to make governments responsible for raising the revenue they are to spend? In practice this means that either the states or the commonwealth provides education, and the one that does has the sole power to raise revenue for it.
Abbott's 'battlelines' may be a supposed future for the Liberal Party, but it is not, in any way, a future for liberalism or conservatism. My loyalties as a liberal and conservative are to them, not the demented and unprincipled pragmatism of a misnomer of such a party. (show less)

The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy
John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. WaltI really enjoyed reading this book. American academics have a far better style of writing than ours in Australia. They are more objective and fact oriented without compromising readability or prose. Our academics by contrast are garbage.
What goes through my head the most is the word "anti-Semite". I absolutely hate the level of fear that the word brings about in people, and it is obvious that a lot of what the lobby depends on is fear to move its agenda. People and politicians are... (show more)

What goes through my head the most is the word "anti-Semite". I absolutely hate the level of fear that the word brings about in people, and it is obvious that a lot of what the lobby depends on is fear to move its agenda. People and politicians are scared into doing the work of the lobby, and thus it derives its strength from cowards motivated by fear.
And these cowards are both Jewish people who are so scared of "what could happen" to them given what has happened in the past and therefore seek hardline policies, and the Gentiles who are so scared of upsetting Jews who have suffered at the hands of their forefathers.
I thank Mearshimer and Walt for not being cowards but for being brave. If only more people were brave like them more conflicts like the Israeli-Palestinian one would be solved sooner. (show less)

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inhe...
Barack ObamaI loved this book, and it has to, in all seriousness, be one of the best-written and hard-hitting that I've read in my life. I am not endeared to Obama's politics, but this was not about them; it was about a man and his life. Obama the man is a very good man, and certainly we could have a far worse person as the President of the US. I'm very pleased that he won rather than McCain, and this solidifies that.

There's a lot in here! A lot about fathers (which, I think, will speak to many sons), a good deal about race and background, and very little about politics. His emotional honesty is such a great breath of air, as he puts in words many of the things which men consider all the time -- but in different circumstances than Kenya, Africa, or Chicago, Illinois, of course.
I recommend reading it. Anyone who has no interest in politics should read it, simply because it will tell you a lot about people -- varied people the world over, but all quite the same nonetheless. And the tragedy of Obama's father (and his father), who knew all about himself, but so little about people, should mean a lot to many.
Go! Buy it; borrow it! (show less)
