Extreme Fiction: Fabulists and Formalists
Robin HemleyExtreme Fiction is definitely Xtreme -- as in pornographic. Between the massive orgy that is "Milk is Very Good for You" and (imaginary?) sex in a falling "Elevator," I'm quite disturbed at what is considered quality literature: let's not forget the incest in "Cornsilk." Between the massive orgy that is "Milk is Very Good for You" and (imaginary?) sex in a falling "Elevator," I'm quite disturbed at what is considered quality literature: let's not forget the incest in "Cornsilk." A variety of writing styles are implemented including collage, which is implemented in "Pastoralia," a mundane story about the superfluity worker-boss relations and the all-powerful corporation. Some of the stories are great discussion pieces. "Is it Sexual Harassment Yet?" displays a story from two different perspectives, and it is up to the reader to decide which character is at fault, a stalker, or flat-out crazy. Even "The Fall River Axe Murders" makes one ponder if Lizzie Borden was really insane or justified. These rare gems are the reason to buy this book, which is not for younger readers, and even the more read community should be wary of its contents. (show less)

ANN CHARTERSThe Story and Its Writer compiles a good amount of newly recognized and classic short stories that cover an array of view points, topics and genres. The Story and Its Writer compiles a good amount of newly recognized and classic short stories that cover an array of view points, topics and genres. There are handy commentaries in the back of the anthology which convey further meaning to the stories by correlating the times in which each work was written to events in the author's life and provide insight into other viewpoints on the text itself. Furthermore, before each section in the book, the reader is given a short biography about the author which helps to provide some context for the story before actually reading it. I highly recommend this book to any person who is interested in writing short fiction or studying its structure. One will find that some narratives follow Freytag's Pyramid and others are interpreted much like a lengthy poem. Notable authors and works include Alexi, Burges, Kafka, "A Rose for Emily," and "The Yellow Wallpaper." (show less)

The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition
Lewis CarrollThe Annotated Alice is a wonderful compilation of both Alice and Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass that gives further meaning to many of Carroll's zany and enchanting scenes.
