Reviews I've Written

  • Shadow Dance: 2
    Angela Carter

Carter's writing seems somehow Gothic and otherworldly. The book is set in the 1960s (I think!) but there is relatively little to fix it to any period. It examines the darkest depths of sexuality and human nature with full commitment, never flinching. I loved everything about the style and found the characters fascinating.

  • THE VIRGIN AND THE GYPSY (PENGUIN POPULAR CLASS...
    D.H. Lawrence

I never saw the action sequence at the end coming, that's for sure! Other than that, I thought the astute emotional sensitivity shown by Lawrence and the nuances in the relationships that he created were brilliant.

  • Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite
    Paul Arden

Arden gets points for fitting so many ideas into a book that takes less than an hour to read. The trouble is many of the ideas are contradictory and some of them are platitudes. What's worse is that some of them are just wrong, and it doesn't what typeface they're written in, they'll still be wrong. But, it does feel very nice in your hands.
