Reviews I've Written

  • The Grapes of Wrath
    John Steinbeck

Set in the dustbowl Depression era in the US, this novel tells the stories of the Joad family, evicted from their farm by the banks and who travel to California to search for jobs and wealth promised in handbills that launch hundreds of desperate families in the same direction. Set in the dustbowl Depression era in the US, this novel tells the stories of the Joad family, evicted from their farm by the banks and who travel to California to search for jobs and wealth promised in handbills that launch hundreds of desperate families in the same direction. Hounded by cops and finding both solace and sometimes despair among the roadside camps and hoovervilles, this is a vivid depiction of the ravages of capitalism and the hatred and fear it causes, along with the camraderie and unwritten laws of trust and respect the "Okies" find amongst themselves. As relevant today as any other era in history, essential reading. (show less)

  • The Story We Find Ourselves In: Further Adventu...

Slightly ordinary narrative style, but great approach to science and theology, even if I wouldn't necessarily jump some of the conclusions of the two central characters. Especially useful in an environment where evolution is seen
as "the enemy" by the ignorant, and some of his ideas aren't too far removed from C S Lewis, one of the greatest 20thC theologians. Recommended for ideas, if not the storyline or prose...

  • Still Life
    A. S. Byatt

Superb. More enjoyable than "Virgin in the Garden", and continues where that left off. Follows Frederica's literary and sexual adventures in Cambridge, as well as the more mundane lives of her family- learning, healing, and a deep, shocking tragedy are at the heart of this beautifully written novel.
