  • Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found
    Suketu Mehta

This book had been recommended to me and, after the recent attacks in Mumbai and having seen the movie "Slumdog Millionaire," I picked it up as something of a companion piece to the film and current events. Overall, a disappointment. Like Abigail says below, I didn't bond with this book much either. It could have been and wished it was much better. • Bangkok Haunts (Vintage)
    John Burdett

My second favorite of Burdett's three manic detective novels set, primarily, in Bangkok. The first ("Bangkok 8") is still my favorite, but "Bangkok Haunts" weaves in more of the Thai mysticism and some history vis-a-vis Cambodia and Khmer Rouge. The tale is downright sordid, not for the sexually queasy or generally queasy, and probably not out of the realm possibility (frighteningly). So, do you believe in ghosts?

  • The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming th...
    Barack Obama

Reads like a long campaign speech. Or, at least, long passages in the book (oil dependence, partisanship, etc) I've heard repeated often between news clips, debates et al. Wish it was less wishy-washy in sections, but there wasn't much doubt who was getting my vote before I read this. Yeah, I'd recommend it. Somewhere like a 6.5 or 7 out of 10.
