Fables Vol. 11: War and Pieces
Bill WillinghamI've been patiently parcelling these out, consciously not picking up the individual issues, but now I'm tempted. This wraps up so many things so neatly, I'm itching to find out where they take the book next, and I'm not sure I can wait 'til June for the next volume.

Val McDermidI've enjoyed the BBC America series immensely, and I enjoyed this even more. Tony HIll is at once pathetic and heroic. I enjoy Robson Green's performance of him, but he only begins to hint at the depths of Hill's fucked-upedness. A good tight story, almost too tight at the end, but I'll forgive the author. Great read.

As an exercise in world creation, it's phenomenal, but as a result, the characters suffer. Fraa Erasmas is no Bobby Shaftoe or Hiro Protagonist. There are occasional flashes of Stephenson's witty prose and dialog, but amidst the details and language of the alternate world he's created, those flashes are jarringly disorienting -- inappropriate to what he's trying to achieve.
What has he achieved? I'm still uncertain. I came to the end feeling like the payoff was missing. I may need a quiet week in a concent myself to meditate on what it all meant. (show less)
