The Magus
John FowlesA young man, an antihero of sorts, goes in search of himself, and finds his sense of identity and reality turned upside down.
I found this book to be an amazing read and an intellectual thrill ride that kept me up 'til 3a.m. several nights and left a lingering air of paranoia and suspicion that followed me into the daylight (in a good way).

Fowles is masterful with his prose and storytelling. Don't listen to the reviews that say this book is pretentious or confusing; if you have some cultural literacy (or access to Wikipedia) you'll do just fine with the literary references. Meanwhile, you'll be drawn into the game along with Nicholas and questing after the truth and meaning of it all. No, Fowles won't supply all the answers, but he does propose possibilities, and the book is better for it.
In short: Read it, read it read it! (show less)

New X-Men Vol. 4: Riot at Xavier's
Grant MorrisonPossibly the most exciting New X-Men installment I've read thus far, "Riot at Xavier's" introduces a new young Omega-level mutant who decides to rebel against Prof. X's ideals by turning against humans, and starts a skinhead-like gang to back him up. The book introduces themes of homosexuality and drug abuse in a way that manages to make these themes seem fresh (rather than played-out or preachy like they are in a lot of other instances). It also continues some intriguing plot lines... (show more)

It also continues some intriguing plot lines from the previous books, including the development of Angel Salvatore's character and the growing influence of Emma Frost over Scott Summers. Very fun stuff! (show less)

New X-Men Vol. 3: New Worlds
Igor KordeyMy favorite thing here was finding out that "Weapon X" is supposed to be "Weapon 10," as in the Roman numeral rather than the letter X. Some clever writing by Grant Morrison... and the appearance of the intriguing new character, Phantomex.
