Marvelous retelling of what is probably the most ancient of tales in Western literature. I may be an old tale, as the introductory lines say, but it is still a relevant one. No story of friendship, loss and grief can ever be otherwise. I'm using the text now in teaching an informal class on the moral vision and moral resposibilty- if the moral vision is the ultimate expression of our free will and humanity, then the discovery of the power of friendship is the first step. It is the first free choice we make in looking outside of ourselves, and so the choice most invested with ourselves. Beautiful book. (show less)

  • Apostles of Disunion: Southern Secession Commis...
    Charles B. Dew

Procides a strong and compellin argument that the American Civil War was primarily caused by slavery and slavery's defense. The author uses the words of Southern leaders themselves, spoken or written at the time of secession, not years after as Southern apologists tried to defend their actions, or gather support for the Lost Cause thesis. Dew notes in the preface that he had originally approached the material from a States Rights perspective, and was convinced by his own research.

  • Death March: The Survivors of Bataan
    Donald Knox

Human beings are capable of incredible endurance, and incredible sacrifice. Perhaps that is the lesson of this fantastic oral history of one of the most gruesome war crimes committed in modern military history, the Bataan Death March, and the treatment on American POW's (the Japanese referred to them as "guests of the Emperor") in work camps in the Home Islands.
