Reviews I've Written

  • American Psycho
    Bret Easton Ellis

Completely compelling. Very difficult to read at times (only book I've ever had to put down and go for a walk and then come back to). The violence is at times sickening, and the interpersonal relationships frustrating and vapid. But that's the point. Fascinating portrait of a sick mind. Very different in extremity to the (quite good) film adaptation, and also ends in an entirely different way.

  • The Vicar of Nibbleswicke
    Roald Dahl

A really fun, entertaining story about a country vicar with dyslexia. As somebody who grew up with dyslexia, I found this book sensitive without being boring. It's a great tale, and I hope we can find another copy of it after giving ours to a very dear friend as a going away present.

  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
    Douglas Adams

The wife and I put this one on hold. Decided we just weren't enjoying reading it aloud to each other. Maybe we're too darn familiar with it to find it funny right now. Not sure. But we're going to try a Hammett book called The Dain Curse. Review to follow after we make it through.

Having said all that, I must say that I absolutely loved this book as a teenager and a young adult. I've read the whole series about 3 times, and listened through the radio series (which came first, and was fantastic) about four times as well.

I tried the TV series, and didn't really like it, and really hated the Hollywood movie. Having said that, I did fall asleep during not enjoying it, but my wife informed me on waking that it hadn't improved.

My recommendation is to listen to the radio series first if you can, but give the books a proper go as soon as you can. Adams was insightful, clever, and loved using language in interesting ways. Enjoy it! (show less)
