I think Greenspan's tell all book was a once in a generation thing. I couldn't even get through Thatcher's book ... so Obama's although well written can be summed up in a few words. I am nice man, I have main stream views although I did a lot of community work, and I work well with everyone ... can't we all get along? I am not sure how many books I've started to read like this and could not continue on at some point. If you read self help books, inspirational books, books about socialogic... (show more)

I am not sure how many books I've started to read like this and could not continue on at some point. If you read self help books, inspirational books, books about socialogical trends ... this book is for you. If you want a 'political operative's' book like David Frum's or an 'insider's perspective' book like Greenspans ... this is not it. (show less)

  • The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World
    Alan Greenspan

I'm only a third of the way through and already it's worth the read. He was an Orthodox Keynsian, worked for 'New Dealers', then an Orthodox Randian ....and has praise for the role played by monetarism (Freedman) and calls Ayn Rand a Libertarian (which she would despise) and was her friend until she died in 1982. He almost became a politico under Nixon once his pragmatic 'world view' set in, but before Watergate got a taste of Nixon's schizophrenia, so disillusioned, went back to private b... (show more)

He almost became a politico under Nixon once his pragmatic 'world view' set in, but before Watergate got a taste of Nixon's schizophrenia, so disillusioned, went back to private business. ... this is a fun read because this is my world he's talking about and apparently he makes some predictions at the end ;) ....

..... Now that I'm finished. It was a satisfying read although the one chapter on the 'Current Account Deficit' put me to sleep a couple of times. I'm sure for some Keynesian's he had to repeat himself a dozen times but ...
Other than that there are many things to agree with. Although published before the subprime mess came to light you can read the prediction between the lines. Makes me glad I'm back in Canada because like he suggested the immigration system is going to evade a political solution and the education system is years from a fix. Higher paid, underemployed technicians with a slightly higher capital turnover babysitting the general workforce in the industry I was in. Not the end of the world but....

So read this book and see 2030. It's no Brave New World or Brilliant Achievement, just 2.5% productivity growth, 4.5% inflation, 10% prime rate, and 175% of 2006 GDP ;) (show less)

An excellent read. One of my favorite Anne Rice books.

See all go
