Reviews I've Written

  • The Final Crash: Addictive Debt and the Deforma...
    Hugo Bouleau

A prescient analysis of the problems in economies such as the US and UK where consumers and house buyers got into ridiculous levels of debt. Published in 2006 by an author who's in the 'private wealth' business, it is insightful. Only drawback is the sickening torrent of overwrought metaphors that swoop mercilessly across each tortured page. Sack the editor (if any).

  • The Road to Wigan Pier
    George Orwell

A classic I finally read. Everyone should: for the reportage of Northern mining and other working class communities in the 1930s, plus for Orwell's musings on why socialism was attracting so few adherents, leaving the way clear for the discontented to fall into fascism. Some of the points about over-earnest, off-putting activism are surely relevant for political parties and movements today.

Paycheques at Salomon Brothers spiralled higher in spite of willingness of others who would, no doubt, do the same for less. There was something fishy about the way that supply met demand in an investment bank".

Very salient for the current debates on exec pay, see for example the whining in the FT last weekend saying that measures to claw back bonuses were 'anti-American', even 'McArthyite'! (show less)
