Reviews I've Written

  • Holy the Firm
    Annie Dillard

I'm gonna read this again. It was a little hard to understand at parts, but beautifully written. It feels like there's so much meaning packed into each word. And I had to read through it quickly for a class.

hooks makes a few really good points and clears up some misconceptions about feminism. This book is her attempt to provide the public with a short, easy-to-understand introduction to the ideas of radical feminism. She spent years waiting for someone else to write the book, and decided it was time for her to take initiative.
She covers some difficult issues and describes a feminist critique and alternative way of doing things. Each chapter is an essay on topics such as work, conceptions of beauty, sexuality, parenting, marriage, violence, and even what feminist masculinity might look like.
She makes it clear that feminism, at its core, is not anti-male but rather anti-sexism. It's just as possible for women to be stuck in sexist ways of thinking as males. Feminism is much more complicated of a movement than the media would have us believe. "A genuine feminist politics always brings us from bondage to freedom, from lovelessness to loving... There can be no love without justice." - from the chapter "To Love Again: The Heart of Feminism"

This book is so epic! If you're patient enough, I would totally recommend this book. It was worth the many hours of listening to the audiobook.
