Blah. A disappointing shift in tone, plot complexity, and character development from her first two novels...
This book was a strange combination of wonderful insights, interesting Scriptural interpretations, beautiful phrases of wisdom, unnecessary criticisms, and frustrating repetitions. CS Lewis, he is not - - but I'll take Bell over Ludy any day.
Mary Stewart demonstrates complete mastery of both the English language and the English people in this light-hearted yet gripping novel, and after reading The Ivy Tree, my love-affair with Stewart has only deepened.
Alternately fascinating, mesmerizing and wistful, by the time I closed the last pages, I was amazed to realized that Golden had successfully convinced me to forget he was a male author writing in a female voice. My complaint: overly-drawn out and a bit dry at times.
