A friend recently introduced me to the third Inkling by way of lending me this book. Williams' language is far more poetic than Lewis or Tolkien, but his skill is sufficient to avoid the ponderous pretentiousness that often accompanies lesser attempts at such a style.
The depth of the subject matter is quite impressive and thought-provoking, and he truly is a master of the genre. Great insights into human nature and Christian redemption.
Vampires on Mississippi River steam boats ... kind of a surreal juxtaposition of Anne Rice and Mark Twain, but Martin's a good enough writer to make it work.
I checked this out because Sanderson was chosen to finish the final book of Robert Jordon's Wheel of Time series, and I was curious to read some of his own books. I'd have to say that Harriet made a great choice. Great book - the characters, plot, magic system, etc. are well-developed and interesting, and Sanderson is a skilled writer. But the unique aspect here is that it's set in the aftermath of the "dark side" having been victorious a thousand years before.
Great series with incredibly good character development and complexity ... the one drawback is a number of unnecessary NC-17 scenes.
An excellent biography of America's greatest explorer (Meriwether Lewis) by one of America's greatest historians (Steven Ambrose)
Very well argued and well written. Lennox debunks Dawkins' atheistic arguments, defends the rationality of theism, and explains the applicable scientific evidence.
Great book on the divinity of Christ, and the uniqueness of Christianity as opposed to pagan religions
Exceptionally believable and well-written fantasy - very good characters and plot; don't get too attached though - Martin isn't shy about killing off your favorites.
Well written and thought provoking. Michael Gerson was Bush's chief speechwriter and a policy adviser. He gives insight into the workings of the White House during the events following 9/11, including many key aspects of the War on Terror. He also promotes a "Heroic Conservatism" that takes "Compassionate Conservatism" to a whole new level.
