This book is rather disturbing and depressing. It depicts a life without books, magazines, and newspapers. The firemen, instead of putting out fires (homes are all fireproof), start them. They burn people’s houses inside when they are caught with or suspected to have books. While students may shout YIPPEE! initially, it wouldn’t take long for them to realize that this scenario is not a good one. I don’t remember when in terms of his ascension to power but I do know that Hitler held several public book burning rallies. I truly believe the way to take complete control over a country is to take away their guns and books. Every time a new crime way hits, people seem to cry for more gun control laws – they need to watch Red Dawn. Watching that movie takes care of one part of the equation. Reading this novel again and realizing the implications of book burning, provides the last part of this equation. Scary but should be required reading. -
