Love in the Time of Cholera
In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career he whiles away the years in 622 affairs--yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral. Fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his love for Fermina, he will do so again.

I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped to. I found it very hard to get invested in, and towards the end I found myself disgusted by the protagonist. It was beautifully written, but the plot and characters just didn't appeal to me. (show less)

If I had liked this book, it wouldn't have taken me over a year to read it. It's a good story if you like your protagonist as a constipated, reclusive, lecherous, statutory rapist who just can't realize, "She's just not that into you."

I found the writing beautiful, but too detailed. It slowed down the story. I also was completely unimpressed with Florentino, He isn't a romantic, he is pathetic. I could grow balls faster then he can.

Love in the Time of Cholera
I loved "One Hundred Days of Solitude", yet there were times I wasn't willing to keep track of the names of the characters. So I was somewhat relieved that Love in the Time of Cholera was not nearly so difficult to track, yet had a love story that was powerful enough to swallow me whole, pick my bones, and leave me to dry on the beach. Don't even think of renting the video, of which I heard was lousy at best. Read the book, turn off your phone, and dig in. You might not even want to stop for food on this one. Florentino Ariza didn't eat much -- perhaps neither should the reader, so we can feel his love hunger.
