Military fiction mixed with magic mixed with politics and a little mystery. This is very dense stuff, but really rewarding. I found hte first half to be a slog, but I couldn't put it down for second half. |

The book has some wicked ideas and tonnes of potential... but there are just WAY too many characters that I began to not care about any of them... because I didn't know who's who. |

Tania started me on this series, with this book, and in some ways it is still my favorite. You can almost feel the author coming to terms with his style and characters, knowing that there was a huge commitment in terms of writing being made with the size of the series. |

It's unbelievable just how vast Steven Erikson's books are. The story is told on a heretofore unseen scale, and despite it all, Erikson tells an enchanting story. Granted, this is not an easy read; it's more for an intelligent reader than a person looking for some mindless fantasy entertainment, as some of the more mainstream books are.

Amazing read. You are not sure who is evil and who is good. It is more the point of view of one of the many great characters. Magic is completely different and everything is not explained to you, most of it you figure out as the characters do. The many different factions make for many points of conflict. Give it a read! |

It's one of the best pieces of fantasy I've read. Similar to Tolkien in richness of texture, glimpses of very elaborate history and character backgrounds, but different in the common tone, which is closer to G.R.R. Martin. Both these comparisons are really big recommendations, at least in my book. What can be seen as annoying is the in medias res approach, with little explanation, leaving it to the reader to tie some of the pieces and concepts together. But the story is engaging, and if you don't give up in the first hundred or so pages (because you are impatient and/or lazy), you won't let go till it's done.

Gardens of the Moon is the first book in Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. This starts the first of three interweaving plot lines and instead of a slow introduction, you end up dumped in the middle. One of my all time favorite books, Gardens of the Moon is filled with rich detail and vivid imagination. I would recommend this for any fan of fantasy or any one who wants to read a true epic. |

First book of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, very odd writing style, also uses some obscure vocabulary, and unless you stick with it, it can be kind of confusing for the first 100 pages. But the story is so huge, complex, and interesting that you really get into it and the proceeding books of the series don't have the same awkwardness to their style. |
